Unpacking

The Narvik-Yarway high pressure Strainers are packed with the greatest care in wooden boxes or
cartons for protection during handling or transit to site.
After hydrostatic testing, the strainer is flushed through with a high grade of preservative to protect
machined and internal surfaces from corrosion. If it is found, however, that damage has occurred
during shipment, then this should be reported immediately to your forwarder or Narvik-Yarway
representative.
Particular care should be taken when removing the strainer from its packing and your special
attention is required to check that no damage has occurred to flange faces, threadings and butt
weld profiles (see figure 1).

Installation of a butt weld strainer

Before installation, check the strainer for any visible damage. Make sure that protective covers are
removed and that butt weld ends are cleaned. Verify with a handheld flash light that the inlet and
outlet connections are free of any obstructions.
Check for the ‘arrow flow direction indicator’ on the body (1).
Install the strainer in such a way that the flow direction is with the arrow. Install the strainer with
the cover (5) is pointing downwards. In this way, sludge and debris trapped by the strainer will be
easily drained when the cover is removed.

Make sure that there is sufficient space to remove the cover for cleaning and inspection of the
strainer element (2).

Welding

The body material is indicated on the strainer. Follow an acceptable welding code such as ASME IX
or EN or your local regulation for welding of the strainer. Make sure that the weld is clean, TIG
welding is preferable. The strainer should not be disassembled before welding.

Installation of a flanged strainer

When the strainer is fitted with flanges make sure flanges are clean and that suitable gaskets are
available.
Do not re-use gaskets. In case of doubt, consult your local gasket supplier.

Maintenance

The strainer requires little maintenance. Especially during start-up of new or refurbished plant one
should check the strainer element for contamination. Make sure that pressure has been relieved
before opening the cover. Grind off the tack-weld between the cover and the body.
Use the special tool (figure 2) or another suitable tool to remove the cover. The threading is
standard right handed (counter clockwise to unscrew).

Clean the strainer element by using compressed air. As should always be the case, use safety
gloves, eye protection and other safety equipment during your work.

Clean the gasket facing on both the body and cover. After cleaning, replace the gasket (4) with a
new one suitable for the pressure and temperature. In case of doubt consult Narvik-Yarway.

Retighten the cover, lightly tapping it until metal-to-metal contact is made between cover and body.

Re-weld the tack-weld.

Note

This weld is only needed to secure the cover and has no sealing function. Check the body material
for appropriate welding electrode selection.
