I. Power- On-Self-Test (POST)
The POST is also referred to as Initialisation (refer to Chapter 4, H) and may be carried out as a SHORT or
FULL process. A description of the two processes follows.
(1) The short POST (approximately 12 seconds) checks that:
(a) The searchlight was STOWED correctly the previous time it was used.
(b) There were no “over current” conditions sensed the last time the searchlight was used.
(c) The lenses are in the “home” (narrow angle) position.
(d) Filter wheel is in the “home” position (No. 1).
NOTE: An “over current” condition indicates that the azimuth and/or elevation limit
switches were contacted during operation. Turbulent flying conditions may
also cause an intermittent over current indication. This is due to excessive
wind pressure on the unit.
Detection of previous “over current” conditions may result in the initiation of
a “Full POST” to redefine the hard stop locations.
(2) A full POST (approximately 60 seconds) will cause the system to:
(a) Initiate a “search” for the limit switches. This “search” begins a count of shaft rotations so that
in operation the searchlight is prevented from contacting the limit switches in both azimuth
and elevation.
NOTE: Software controlled “soft stops” are set up during this process.
(b) The limit switch, lenses and filter positions are checked.
(c) Following completion of the checks, the searchlight will move to its specified STOW position
in preparation for deployment and operation.
(3) Flowcharts of the checks performed are provided in Figure 43 and Figure 44.
