3.2 Real-Time Communication
Communications in PROFINET contain different levels of performance:
● The non-time-critical transmission of parameter data, configuration data and
switching information occurs in PROFINET in the standard channel based on TCP
or UDP and IP. This establishes the basis for the connection of the automation
level with other networks.
● For the transmission of time-critical process data PROFINET differentiates
between three real-time classes, which differentiate themselves regarding their
efficiency:
–
Real-Time (RT Class1, RT)
- Use of standard components, e.g. switches
- Comparable Real-Time characteristics such as PROFIBUS
- Typical application field is the Factory Automation
–
Real-Time (RT Class2, RT)
- Synchronized and non-synchronized data transmission possible
- PROFINET capable switches must support the synchronization
–
Isochronous-Real-Time (RT Class 3, IRT)
- Clock-synchronized data transmission
- Hardware support by switch-ASIC
- Typical application fields are drive controls in Motion Control Applications
