Replacing the spark plugs

Do not reuse spark plug with damaged
insulation, or sparks can leak through
crack, potentially leading to electric
shock, explosion and/or fire.

Do not touch spark plugs immediately
after stopping engine as they will be hot
and could cause severe burns if
touched. Allow motor to cool down first.
Note
When in s pecting the plug, alway s clean the
ga s ket s urface and u s e a new ga s ket. Wipe
off any dirt from the thread s and s crew in
the s park plug to the correct torque.
If the s park plug( s ) i s fouled, ha s carbon
build up, or i s worn, it s hould be replaced.
When reu s ing s park plug s , remove dirt
from the electrode s and adju s t s park gap
to s pecification.
1 Remove the top cowl.

Remove the s park plug s by turning
counter-clockwi s e with the s ocket
wrench (21 mm: 13/16 in) fitted with the
handle. Tap lightly on the
s park plug s if
they are hard to turn.

Notes

S park plug torque :
27.0Nm (20ft-lb) (2.7kgf-m)
If a torque-wrench i s not available when you
are fitting a s park plug, a good e s timate of
the correct torque i s 1/4 to
1/2 a turn pa s t finger-tight. Have the s park
plug adju s ted to the correct torque a s s oon
a s po ss ible with a torque-wrench.
Do not touch the high tension cords run-
ning from the ignition coil to the spark
plugs while the engine is running or is
turned by the electric starter motor, not
even for testing the high tension cords or
the spark plugs.
The high tension cords and the spark plugs
generate very high electric voltage, which
can cause a serious electric shock if
touched.
