Chapter 1 ’Overview’ — Purpose

Amethyst III DTV Smart Switch

User Manual

DVB-T SFN Capability

Amethyst III ASI provides smart redundancy switch for DVB-T terrestrial 
networks, that is, seamless switching support for:

Transport streams with MIP from NetProcessor SFN adapters

Transport streams with MIP (duplicated signal) transmitted over two 
separate paths (delay compensation required)

Amethyst III realigns the transport streams according to MIP and 
preserves the structure of DVB-T megaframes on its output in case of 
switching. Service outage caused by DVB-T modulator is avoided. 
Perfectly combined with the NetProcessor, Amethyst III supports up to 
four independent (or combined) switches in 1-RU.

DVB-T2 SFN Capability

Amethyst III ASI provides smart redundancy switch for DVB-T2 terrestrial 
networks, that is, seamless switching support for:

T2-MI streams from NetProcessor T2 gateways (v04.70 or upper)

T2-MI streams (duplicated signal) transmitted over two separate paths 
(delay compensation required)

Amethyst III realigns the T2-MI streams and preserves the structure and 
timestamp on its output in case of switching. Service outage caused by 
DVB-T2 modulator is avoided. Perfectly combined with the NetProcessor, 
Amethyst III supports up to four independent (or combined) T2-MI 
switches in 1-RU.

Delay Compensation Capability

Amethyst III also offers delay compensation capability by simultaneously 
analyzing delayed (from several milliseconds to several seconds) input 
streams. If one input is detected as being corrupted, Amethyst III 
compensates the time difference and switches seamlessly to the other, 
uncorrupted stream without any disturbance to end users. Typical 
applications include network distribution redundancy.

Configuration and Supervision

Amethyst III has an embedded Ethernet 10/100Base-T port and contains 
a fully configured Web server that you can access remotely through any 
standard browser for equipment control and supervision. It also provides 
a complete display of switching configurations along with easy-to-read 
input/output status information, error-log data, and bit rate graphics. The 
Amethyst III embeds an SNMP agent for centralized management 
applications.
