Cleaning the Ion Source Components

The ion source consists of an ion volume, lenses, and filament. The ion volume is directly
exposed to any sample that is injected into the GC/MS, so it may need to be cleaned more
frequently than any other component. The frequency can increase depending on the types
and amounts of samples you typically run. Although you can clean the ion volume with or
without an inlet valve, you can save a lot of time and effort by cleaning it with an inlet valve.
Using the I/R tool allows you to easily access the ion volume by entering the vacuum manifold
through the inlet valve without breaking vacuum, thus saving you from shutting down and
disassembling the DSQ II.

Cleaning the Ion Volume with an Inlet Valve

To clean the ion volume with an inlet valve, you will need:

• Cleaning supplies for stainless steel parts
• Gloves, clean, lint- and powder-free
• Insertion/removal tool (I/R tool) and guide bar
• Lint-free cloth

1. Open

Xcalibur

and click

DSQ II

in the Status tab.

2. Click the

Insert/Remove Probe

button on the Status tab to open the Insert/Remove

Probe window.

3. Prepare the inlet valve.

With the guide bar track facing left, insert the guide bar into the guide bar opening.
