Cleaning the External Surfaces of the Detector
Keep the external surfaces of the detector clean and dry. To clean the outside of the detector,
wipe it with a dust-free cloth or a damp cloth (moistened with water only) to remove dirt or
stains.
Flushing the Flowcell
An applied lamp voltage greater than 4.5 V can indicate a dirty flowcell. If purging the
flowcell with water does not reduce the lamp voltage, you might need to flush-clean the
flowcell.
A 20 percent nitric acid (v/v) solution is an effective flush-cleaning agent for organic films and
residue. Flush the pump and the flowcell with water prior to performing a nitric acid flush.
Remove any trace of organic solvent in the pump, plumbing to the flowcell.
Y
To flush the flowcell
1. Prepare a 20% (v/v) solution of nitric acid in HPLC-grade water.
2. Connect the LC pump directly to the Accela RI Detector.
3. Launch the ChromQuest data system.
The Instrument window appears.
4. Choose
Control > Instrument Status
.
The Instrument Status window appears.
5. Click the
Accela RI
tab.
6. Click the
RI Diagnostic
tab.
7. In the Purge Control area, click
On.
8. Pump the acid solution at 1 mL/min for 3 to 4 minutes.
9. Turn off the pump flow and allow the 20% nitric acid solution to stand in the flowcell for
3 to 10 minutes.
Note
A 20 percent nitric acid solution will not damage a Thermo Fisher Scientific
analytical pump.
CAUTION
Nitric acid is a strong oxidizing acid, and it can react vigorously with alcohols
(especially methanol). Be sure to wear protective clothing and eye protection and adhere
to safety procedures at your company for the proper handling and disposal of corrosive
acids. Flush the flowcell with water to remove all traces of alcohol before flushing it with
nitric acid.
