Engine Maintenance

NOTE: If the fill hose is allowed to pull air
into the system, the system will be
under-filled. In this case, either lower the
system coolant level back to the 5 inches
below the top of the fill neck and repeat the
vacuum fill process or manually purge air
from the system as described in the Spill Free
Funnel Procedure.
10. Replace the coolant cap with a Cooling
System Pressure Test Kit such as a Mityvac
MV4530 (shown below) or similar tool.
Figure 168: Cooling System Pressure Test Kit
11. Start the engine and run the system until the
engine temperature reaches normal operation
temperature of 160 to 165 F (71 to 74 C). Do
not artificially increase the coolant
temperature above the normal operation
temperature, by covering the coil or any other
means.
12. Ensure the cooling system pressure is above
14 psig (97 kPa). The system pressure may
fluctuate when the thermostat cycles open and
closed. As long as the system reaches 14 psig
(97 kPa) at some point during the test the
fluctuation is OK and the system is full. If the
engine achieves the 14 psig (97 kPa) cooling
system pressure at an engine temperature of
less than 165 F (74 C) it passes the test and
there is no need to continue heating the engine
or continuing to run the test.
If the cooling system pressure does not
achieve full system pressure of 14 psig (97
kPa), the system is not full and you should;
•
First check for cooling system leaks.
•
Next, use the Spill Free Funnel Procedure
to purge any air bubbles out of the system.
13. When the system is completely cool, replace
the pressure test cap with the radiator cap and
return the unit to service.
Spill Free Funnel Procedure
1. Remove the expansion tank cap (P/N 13-990)
from the pressurized side of the expansion
tank. Fill the cooling system via the expansion
tank until the coolant level is up to the
overflow tank inlet passage opening.
DANGER: Pressure test caps typically do
not incorporate a safety pressure relief
device and may not use temperature rated
components. Do not run the engine over
the normal operation temperature of 165
F (74 C) when the pressure gage is
installed. In NO case run the engine
cooling system pressure above 18 psig (124
kPa). Do not leave the pressure test tool
unattended on a running unit. Do not use
the pressure relief valve on the test tool
until the system has completely cooled
down. Follow all instructions and
warnings supplied with the pressure test
tool.
