Z-Max Surveying System Operation and Applications Manual

GPS Receiver Does Not Track Satellites

The SV/Power LED on the front panel of the Z-Max GPS Receiver Module blinks
green for each healthy satellite supplying good data for data collection. If the LED
blinks only red for more than five minutes then something is wrong. Follow the outline
below to determine the cause of this problem.

Step 1. Does the GPS receiver have a clear view of the sky?

The path between the satellite and the GPS antenna should be outdoors and
relatively free of obstructions. The receiver may not track satellites at all indoors.

Step 2. Is the GPS receiver powered up?

To determine if the receiver is powered up, examine the SV/Power LED on the front panel
of the receiver. If the LED is on and blinks red every 1-2 seconds, the receiver is on.

Receiver not powered up

1. Turn on the receiver.

Press and hold the power switch on the Z-Max front panel. The button must be
held for two seconds since there is a delay in power on. You will see the power
LED turn on and the display will begin to show text. Assuming that you are in
an area with a relatively unobstructed view to the sky, within a minute of power
up, the receiver should be tracking multiple satellites.
Go to step 2 if the receiver does not power up.

2. Check the power source.

The Z-Max supports both internal (Power Module) and external power sources.

a.If using the Power Module, press the power level indicator button. If the

power level is low, replace the module with a fully-charged module and
turn on the receiver.

b.If using external power, check to ensure the power cable is properly

connected to both the battery and the receiver.

(i). If the cable is properly connected, check the power level of the

external power source. If low, replace the battery with a good one and
turn on the receiver.

(ii). If external power source is good and the cable is connected to both

the receiver and the power source, there may be a problem with the
cable. If available, try a different power cable. If the new cable works,
the old cable is malfunctioning. Call your local dealer or Thales
Navigation technical support for assistance.
