Chapter 4: ProtectToolkit 7 Software Installation
Modifying the ProtectToolkit Client Windows Installation
You can modify an existing ProtectToolkit client installation/configuration on Windows by using the client
installer. This includes adding new client components, modifying the list of accessible ProtectServer 3 HSM
IPs, or switching between HSM and Software Emulation mode.
NOTE
With logging enabled, you can no longer use the Windows installer to switch between
HSM and Software Emulator modes. See
in the
ProtectToolkit-C
Programming Guide
for more information.
To modify the ProtectToolkit client installation
1.
From the Windows Start menu, select
Start > Safenet > Modify ProtectToolkit Client
.
The Windows Installer opens to the
Select Components
dialog, displaying your installed PTK
components.
2.
Select or deselect components as desired and click
Next
.
New components will be installed. If you deselected previously-installed components, they will not be
uninstalled from the client, but their related configuration will change. For example, if you switch the HSM
Communication Interface from PCI to Network, the PCIe driver will not be deleted, but you will be prompted
to add valid IP addresses for network-connected ProtectServer 3 HSMs at the end of the modification
procedure.
3.
If the
Network HSM Communication Interface
is installed, you can update the list of IP addresses for
ProtectServer 3 HSMs this client will access.
4.
If any of the
HSM Communication Interface
components are installed, you can switch between HSM and
Software Emulation mode.
CAUTION!
Applications that were running before the modification, including
cmd
windows,
must be restarted before changes are reflected. Be especially cautious about this when
switching from Software Emulation to HSM mode.
Installing ProtectToolkit 7 on Linux
The Linux Installation Utility (
safeNet-install.sh
) allows you to install ProtectToolkit client components on a
Linux client. Manual commands can be used, but this is not the recommended method. The Installation Utility is
more likely to result in a problem-free installation or uninstallation. The latest versions of the client software and
HSM firmware can be found on the Thales Technical Support Customer Portal. See
for more information.
The utility provides a simple menu-driven interface. In addition to installing and uninstalling the access provider
on Linux systems, it can also:
>
List already-installed packages
>
List directory contents, for the current platform or all platforms
>
Install a package from the directory (which also installs the utility in
/usr/bin
)
>
Change the default operating mode (hardware or software-only).
