NIRvana HS Camera System

2.1.2
Window
The NIRvana HS window is composed of AR-coated fused silica.
2.1.3
Cooling
Dark current is reduced in NIRvana HS camera systems by utilizing thermoelectric
cooling of the sensors. Cooling by this method uses a Peltier cooler in combination
with air-circulation (i.e., fan,) and/or circulating coolant. The NIRvana HS defaults to
cooling set point of -50
°
C. Maximum cooling is -55
°
C with air or water.
To prevent condensation and contamination from occurring, cameras cooled in this
manner are evacuated. Due to sensor size/packaging differences, the lowest achievable
temperature varies by NIRvana HS model.
REFERENCES:
Refer to model-specific NIRvana HS data sheets for
respective cooling specifications.
A feature of air-cooled NIRvana HS cameras is software control of the camera’s internal
fan. When fan vibration may affect results, the fan can be turned off and while coolant
continues to be circulated through the camera, thus maintaining an adequate sensor
cooling temperature.
If the NIRvana HS is operating inside an enclosure, the enclosure must have
unrestricted air flow to an open environment.
2.1.3.1
Internal Fan
The NIRvana HS is equipped with an internal, low-vibration fan that:
•
Removes heat from the Peltier device that cools the sensor; and
•
Cools the electronics.
An internal Peltier device directly cools the cold finger on which the sensor is mounted.
Air drawn into the camera through the back of the camera removes the heat produced
by the Peltier device and then vents out through the slots on the side panels. By default,
the fan is always in operation, and air-cooling of both the Peltier and the internal
electronics takes place continuously.
CAUTION!
!
For the fan to function properly, free air circulation must be
maintained between the sides of the camera and the
laboratory atmosphere. A minimum of two (2) inches
(50 mm) of clearance must be maintained around the
camera’s vented covers.
The low-vibration fan typically has no adverse affect on image quality. However, if the
fan’s vibration does reduce image quality and the NIRvana HS is also being cooled via an
external coolant circulator, the fan may be turned off to reduce vibration.
