FRONT BRAKE
The OEM brake pads are fitted with a brake pad wear
indicator. When the brake pads are worn beyond their
service limit, the wear indicator will contact the brake
rotor resulting in a loud squeal. Do not rely on the wear
indicator to determine when the pads are worn out. It is
possible that non-OEM pads have been installed that do
not have the wear indicator or the indicator may have
been damaged and not functioning properly.
The service limit for the brake pads is 3/32 inches (2.38
mm).
Service limit for the rotor is: 0.441 inches (11.2 mm).
Inspection
1: Raise the front of the vehicle and support with
jack stands.
2: Remove the front wheels.
3: Measure the distance between the rotor and the
brake pad backing plate (all 4 pads, both ends of
each pad). If any one of the four brake pads are
equal to or less that the service limit then all four
pads should be replaced.
4: Measure the rotor thickness in three places. If the
rotor thickness is less than the service limit then
the rotor must be replaced.
5: Measure the rotor runout. If the runout exceeds
0.005” then the rotor must be resurfaced. After
resurfacing the rotor, measure the rotor thickness.
If the rotor thickness is less than the service limit,
then the rotor must be replaced.
6: Lower the vehicle.
7: Reconnect the battery, remove the blocks from
behind the wheels and test drive the vehicle.
This section is one section of a complete service
manual. Before starting any procedure, read all
warnings and instructions that are located in the
Service Guidelines chapter.
WARNING
Replace Pads
1: Raise the front of the vehicle and support with
jack stands.
2: Remove the wheels. Refer to procedure in “Tires
and Wheels” section.
3: Thoroughly clean the exterior of the brake caliper
assemblies.
4: Remove the caliper assemblies from the vehicle.
Discard the caliper bolt locking plates.
5: Un-clip the spreader springs from the brake pads.
6: Remove the lock spring from the brake pad guide
pins.
7: Remove the brake pad guide pins, spreader
springs, and brake pads.
8: Remove the stainless steel silencer plate and
heat insulator from the inner pad.
9: Remove the two heat insulators plates from the
outer pad.
10: Push the two caliper guide pins out from the
rubber bushings.
11: Remove the rubber bushings from the caliper
body and discard.
12: Remove the rubber cap from the bleeder valve
and discard.
13: Thoroughly clean all components.
14: If the guide pin rubber bushings were damaged,
inspect the caliper guide pins and caliper casting
for wear. If there is any evidence of wear, the
entire caliper should be replaced.
15: Insert new caliper guide pin rubber bushings into
the caliper. Using a silicone based lubricant such
as DOW Corning #7, lightly lubricate the inside
on the bushings.

Current Taylor-Dunn® brakes are asbestos free. However, there is the
possibility that the original brakes were replaced with aftermarket parts
containing asbestos. Since this possibility exists, all brake parts should be
handled as if they contain asbestos. Refer to Appendix C for recommended
handling precautions.
