3-38     ENGINE

PISTON RING FREE END GAP AND PISTON RING END GAP

Measure the piston ring free end gap using a vernier calipers.
Next, fit the piston ring squarely into the cylinder and measure
the piston ring end gap using a thickness gauge.
If the piston ring’s end gap is out of specification, replace the
piston ring.

Piston ring free end gap

Service Limit (1st): 8.0 mm (0.31 in)

(2nd): 8.8 mm (0.35 in)

Service Limit (1st): 0.5 mm (0.020 in)

(2nd): 0.7 mm (0.028 in)

CONROD AND CRANKSHAFT

CONROD SMALL END I.D.

Measure the conrod small end inside diameter using the dial cal-
ipers. If the conrod small end inside diameter exceeds the ser-
vice limit, replace the conrod.

Service Limit: 18.040 mm (0.7102 in)

CONROD DEFLECTION

Move the small end sideways while holding the big end immov-
able in thrust direction. Measure the amount of deflection.
Turn the conrod and see if it moves smoothly without play and
noise. This method can check the extent of wear on the parts of
the conrod’s big end.
