8.4.5 Replacing/grinding in carbon brushes
For mounting and disassembly of the brushes see section 6.5.
NOTE
To be observed during assembly:
► The brushes have to be fitted at the required distance to the slip ring. This secures the right brush
pressure.
► The brushes are aligned radially to the shaft centre and mounted oscillation-free.
Grinding in the carbon brushes
New carbon brushes only have a punctiform or linear contact surface on the slip ring. This causes a high current
density when the current flows, which may damage the running surface. To avoid this, the carbon brushes have
to be ground-in. By grinding them in, they are adjusted to the radius of the slip ring for an optimal contact
surface.
Grinding in the
carbon brushes 1. Slide the emery cloth (grade 80 - 100) between the
carbon brush (102) and the surface of the slip
ring (4).
2. Fix the emery cloth with adhesive tape.
3. Turn the clutch back and forth with the slip ring until
the running surface of the carbon brush adopts
roughly the shape of the slip ring. The carbon brush
is ground-in under normal brush pressure. This
process is complete when approx. 70% of the brush
running surface is in contact with the slip ring.

4. After grinding the brush in, both brush and slip ring
have to be cleaned of filing dust.
