start event - an event which activates its associated signal circuits until those signal circuits are
deactivated by one or more stop events
stop event - an event which deactivates its associated signal circuits
synchronous clock - a secondary clock that receives a constant “run” voltage (usually line
voltage), and hourly and 12 correction signals as appropriate (usually to a separate coil
or motor)
time base - the source (line frequency or oscillator) to which the Master Time Programmer’s
timekeeping is synchronized
time format - the manner in which time is displayed, such as 12 hour or 24 hour format
UTC - Universal Time Coordinated; an internationally agreed upon time standard based on the
time at the 0

meridian.
utility device - a device connected to a signal circuit that is designed to be turned “on” or “off,”
such as for lighting, environmental control, or security
WWV - the call letters of the radio station operated at Fort Collins, CO by NIST that is
responsible for broadcasting Universal Time Coordinated (UTC); often used as a general
description for any method of calibrating a time indicating device against UTC
