Getting the Stated Range out of Your System
Standard Bearer Machines calculates the range for an MDV with a single battery to be between 35 (56
km) and 49 miles (79 km) depending on battery and chainring system used for a combined rider and
load of 176 lbs (80kg). The calculation is based on riding on flat ground, on asphalt, no wind, at 10 mph
in the most efficient gear combination, with tires fully inflated and with no pedaling. Our experience
with every day riding gets approximately 20 miles of range due to starting and stopping as well as going
up hills. Pedaling without adding too much effort can double range. If you have a Range Doubler,
double your expected range as an estimate.
Do not expect to get the calculated range if you are not riding in ideal conditions. Changing to dirt roads
and running at lower tire pressures reduces the range by half. Riding with a load greater than 176 lbs (80
kg) also decreases the range. If you stop and start on your ride (traffic lights, stop signs), your range
numbers decrease due to the accelerations. If you are riding on hills, through sand and snow or rough
terrain, you also decrease range.
To test your maximum range, plan a flat circuit with no stops, fully charge you battery, and ride without
pedaling 7
th
or 8
th
gear at a steady 10 mph (16 kph).

Securing your MDV
When riding the MDV in areas where theft is a concern, use appropriate cable or chain locking devices
and make sure to thread the cable/or chain through the frame, wheels and saddle/seatpost to avoid
quick removal.
Standard Bearer Machines recommends you use the Password feature found in the display settings to
enable a password when you power on the MDV. The Display Settings allow you to enter a four-digit
password required for you to turn on the system. The password prevents someone other than you from
turning on the power and inadvertently or maliciously powering the motor.
