Problem of flow restriction
11.2.1
Find the problem
No peak
Smaller peak than usual
Flow restriction
TGA oven back pressure
Check that the 3-way valve is
in the IST16 position
Is it the case?
Turn the 3-way valve on the IST16
position and run a sequence of
blanks to clean the system.
Check the flow (50 mL/min) at the TGA
inlet.
Then, with the TGA oven closed, check
the flow at the IST16 outlet.
Both flows must be very close.
Is it the case?
Conclusion:
There is a leak or a
restriction.
Disconnect the IST16 and run a cleaning
method on the TGA.
Check the condition of the union and
Teflon® tube; change them if necessary.
In this case, clean the sampling transfer
line with a solvent (see § 11.2.2)
Conclusion: identical flows mean that there
is no leakage in the sampling system.
Check the parameters of the MS detector
and look for any noise. The problem should
be an injection problem (IST16) or a
detection/split problem on the GC-MS side.
Use a standard gas cylinder instead of a TGA
sample for sampling/storage.
It will help you to validate the IST16/GC/MS
system.
