Two-Function Longhorn Third Brake Light
Installation Instructions: Pole Mount and Wiring
If your rear window slants by less than about 40 degrees relative to horizontal, some of the 62
LEDs will NOT be visible and you need the pole mount kit
.
It is highly recommended that you get a professional to install your Longhorn Third Brake
Light!!
Most auto stereo shops are equipped to handle this operation as are auto mechanics and
trailer light and hitch installers. Read these instructions completely and if you have any difficulty
understanding them, get assistance or have a professional install the light.
It is illegal to remove or disconnect your factory installed third brake light.
The UT light is
designed to be a decorative supplement only.
It is suggested that you install the Longhorn Third Brake Light directly above or below your
current third brake light if your vehicle has one. Most of the time, this is the easiest site without
obstructing you rear vision.
Do not mount the Longhorn Third Brake Light permanently until after you have run the wires and
tested the set of 3 color coded wires, as discussed below.
Connecting the wires
Disconnect the ground (-) side of the vehicle battery.
It is recommended that you use 18-gauge wire and make wire connections using 18-gauge bullet
connectors.
The
white wire
goes to a convenient ground.
The
brown wire
goes to the brake lights. Do
not
to the rear brake light wires because on most
cars this wire serves 2 functions: turn signal and brake lights, with the ‘decision’ about which
function to fulfill made within the steering column at the turn signal switch Attach to the stock third
brake light, you can easily find the wire within the housing that is hot only when the brake pedal is
depressed. Otherwise, you will need to connect the brown wire to the brake light switch.
The
red wire
goes to an ‘ignition on’ source. This MUST only go to a power source that is
activated by the key; otherwise, the light will be constantly on. It is EXTREMELY important that
the 2-amp fuse supplied with your Longhorn Third Brake Light be inserted into your red wire
extension close to the “ignition on” power source.
Perform a function test to make certain that your wiring is connected correctly before permanently
mounting the Longhorn Third Brake Light.
You have 2 options for mounting the base of the pole mount kit to the vehicle: using screws or
Velcro.
