Piston Travel
There is a maximum piston travel of 38mm and the press will
automatically stop when this is reached. An error message “Reached
Piston Limit!“ will be momentarily illuminated as an indicator.
When using highly compressible samples it is possible for the
maximum travel to be reached before the desired “Pump up to” load
has been applied. If this occurs, the Applied Load reading may be the
same as the “Pump up to” load. However, the piston having reached its
maximum limit of travel will be evident by little or no load being
indicated on the Applied Load indicator during “Load Rising” status. At
the very end of the piston travel the Applied Load indicator value rises
almost instantaneously to the “Pump up to” load value. (This would be
the same situation as that found for No Sample In The Pressing Area –
see Section 7 Page 51). If it is thought that this has occurred the
pressure should be released to allow the piston face (

) to retract.
This is achieved by pressing the release button (
12
) to allow the piston
to retract. However, if the piston does not retract after pressing the
release button (
12
), then press the start button again (
11
) and then
immediately lift the safety guard (
5
) to an open position. The piston
face (
7
) will then begin to retract to its starting position. If the piston
does not reach its full retraction starting position by the time the “RDY”
indicator is shown, then by pressing the start button (
11
) again and
opening the guard (
5
) immediately, the piston retraction process is
continued.
To continue with any pressing process the lead screw (
8
) should then
be adjusted so that the top bolster anvil face (
10
) is 2mm to 3mm from
the sample and the set tonnage load is re-applied by pressing of the
start button (
11
) again. It is therefore advisable when using highly
compressible samples to observe the process until the desired load is
achieved.

If at all possible avoid running the piston to the limit of its
travel
.
