Power supply problems
In the event of failure of one of the PSUs, an alarm will
sound. The server will continue to function normally with
two working PSUs.
Faulty PSUs should be replaced as soon as possible as a
further PSU failure may result in loss of data.
Server will not power up
Server shuts down automatically
Caution
Symptom
Possible Problem
Recommended Action
Power Supply Module
green status LEDs are
lit, but unit does not
power up when POWER
button is pressed.
Server completes the
boot-up process.
Loose/faulty connector
between POWER button
and LED switch board.
Faulty LED switch board.
Loose/faulty connector
between the LED switch
board and the Motherboard
+5 V or +12 V line on
Motherboard short-circuit.
PS-ON/PS-OK signal path
broken (Motherboard power
connector).
Motherboard fault (memory,
volt regulator, controller).
Check voltages on LED switch board connectors, using a multimeter
(see
“LED switch board (PN16-0102)” on page 40
Check the power and signal voltages (+12 V, +5 V, +3.3 V, PS-ON,
PS-OK) on Motherboard power connectors (24-pin, 8-pin, 4-pin) using
a multimeter (see
).
Check LEDs (CPU fault, DIMM fault, etc.) on the Motherboard (see
).
Replace chassis if fault found on motherboard, LED switch board or
associated cabling (see
“Chassis replacement (containing
motherboard and CPUs)” on page 92
).
Server stops/hangs
during boot/initialise.
Motherboard fault (memory,
voltage regulator, controller
chip, etc.).
PCI board is not installed
correctly.
PCI board, memory, HDD
fault.
Check LEDs (CPU fault, DIMM fault, etc.) on the Motherboard (see
Check the POST LEDs and the POST beep codes (see
), if any.
Confirm of the POST code 'POST Error Pause' is enabled by setting
up BIOS (see
“Motherboard BIOS manager” on page 50
Check the PCI bus is working by using the PC-Check utility (see
).
Temporarily remove PCI boards and memory, HDD, and USB cable,
to see if they are causing the problem (see
Replace chassis if motherboard fault found (see
(containing motherboard and CPUs)” on page 92
).
Replace PCI board if necessary (see
or
“NIC card replacement” on page 90
).
Server stops/hangs
during boot/initialise
before Linux is running.
OS-HDD not set up as boot-
device by BIOS setting.
Boot-sector in the OS-HDD
is broken.
S-ATA cable disconnected/
loose/faulty.
Confirm that OS-HDD is detected by BIOS on the Motherboard (see
“Motherboard BIOS manager” on page 50
).
Confirm that OS-HDD is boot-device set up by BIOS on the
Motherboard (see
“Motherboard BIOS manager” on page 50
).
Check S-ATA cable by swapping with known-good cable.
Replace OS-HDD if necessary (see
“OS HDD replacement” on page 87
).
Symptom
Possible Problem
Recommended Action
Server shuts down
automatically.
Temperature detection
circuit fault on System
Power Board.
Over-voltage detection
circuit or over-current
detection circuit fault.
Voltage gradually drops.
Check the voltage (+12 V, +5 V, +3.3 V, PS-ON, PS-OK) on
Motherboard power connectors (24-pin, 8-pin, 4-pin) using a
multimeter (see
).
Replace faulty System Power Board, if necessary (see
