for Encore

/ZIF G4 Processor Upgrade Card Users
• If you have installed, or are going to install Mac OS 9.1 (or higher) on
your Encore/ZIF G4-upgraded system, please disregard the information in
the “Upgrading to Mac OS 9.x and a G4” chapter of the included manual.
Mac OS 9.1 and higher has built-in AltiVec library and plug-in support, so
there is no need to re-run the Mac OS 9.1 (or later) install application after you
install the Encore card as described in the manual.
• Are you installing this Encore/ZIF G4 card into a beige Power Macintosh G3
system? If the answer is yes, do you have Mac OS X installed, or planning
to do so in the future? If so, you must download an additional file to take
full advantage of the Encore/ZIF G4’s performance under Mac OS X.
Sonnet X Tune-Up installs files necessary to enable your Encore card’s L2
cache; without the files, Mac OS X performs slowly. Point your web browser to
www.sonnettech.com/downloads/osx_upgrade_sw.html#tuneup
, and
then download and install the files; this software is free.
• Are you installing this Encore/ZIF G4 card into a Power Macintosh G3 Blue
& White system? If so, you must install Sonnet software, as described in
Chapter 2 of the included manual, regardless of which Mac OS is installed
in your system.
The Crescendo/Encore software installer installs a Power Macintosh G3
firmware patch that is critical to the operation of this processor upgrade card
in your system; without the patch, it won’t work. The software installer must
be run under Mac OS 8.x or 9.x, NOT Mac OS X, NOR Classic Mode under
Mac OS X. Once the Sonnet software installation is complete, you may use
any compatible Mac OS, including OS X.
