INTRODUCTION
Thank you for purchasing the Sonance CRKW Rock Woofer. When
properly installed, this woofer will provide you with years of outdoor
entertainment pleasure.
To get the most out of your new woofer, please read this manual
thoroughly before you begin installation.
PARTS LIST
Each Sonance CRKW Rock Woofer includes the following:
• (1) CRKW Rock Woofer
• (1) Removable wire termination cover plate; (4) screws
OPTIONAL ACCESSORIES
CRK20
(part #91959) Weather-resistant Rock Speakers (pair)
INSTALLING AND CONNECTING THE WOOFER
1. Decide on the location for the woofer (and for your satellite speakers, if
you’re installing them at this time). Also, estimate the length of wire you’ll
need for each speaker.
You will be connecting the CRKW woofer directly to your amplifier, and
connecting each of your satellite speakers to the CRKW woofer. You will
need 2 lengths of wire to connect the CRKW to your amplifier — one
for the left channel and one for the right channel.
Note: The CRKW has built-in low-pass and high-pass filters that direct the
bass frequencies to the CRKW and the rest of the sound to your satellite
speakers. This dramatically improves the satellite speakers’ power handling.
For best sound quality, we recommend that each satellite speaker be
placed no more than 8 feet away from the CRKW. If the satellites are
placed too far away from the CRKW the woofer’s sound will not blend
with the sound from the satellites.
Note: When purchasing additional wire, Sonance strongly recommends
using direct burial grade wire. See Wire Gauge and Sound Quality for the
suggested wire gauge for different wire lengths.
2. Dig a 4” – 5” deep trench to run the speaker wires in. You will need a
trench from the area near
your amplifier to the
CRKW, and then from the
CRKW to the two satellite
speakers.
3. Run 2 lengths of the
appropriate gauge wire
through the trench from
your amplifier to the
CRKW. Connect those
wires to the CRKW
according to the illustration
to the right.
4. Connect the wires from
your satellite speakers to
the CRKW according to
the illustration to the right.
IMPORTANT: Be sure not to
let any stray ‘+’ and ‘–’ wires
touch each other. Touching
wires can cause a short-circuit
that could damage your
amplifier.
5. After you have made the above connections, connect the wires to your
amplifier.
Double-check that you connected all of the wires properly (amplifier ‘+’
to speaker ‘+; amplifier ‘–’ to speaker ‘–’) at all of the connections.
IMPORTANT: Be sure not to let any stray ‘+’ and ‘–’ wires touch each other.
Touching wires can cause a short-circuit that could damage your amplifier.
6. After confirming that you’ve properly made all of the connections,
turn your amplifier on and test the system with your favorite music.
If the speakers are all operating properly, refill the wire trenches and
using the supplied screws, attach the wire termination cover plate to the
connector panel on the bottom of the CRKW enclosure. The cover plate
will keep moisture from damaging the connections.
WIRE GAUGE AND SOUND QUALITY
Extra resistance in the speaker wire can make a speaker sound less dynamic
and reduce definition of the bass frequencies. In extreme cases, it can even
attenuate high frequencies. Also, amplifier power is wasted in wire with
extra resistance, reducing your system’s maximum output level.
To prevent degrading sound quality, the total wire resistance should be less
than 10% of the speaker’s impedance. This means that for 8-ohm speakers
like the CRKW Rock Woofer, the total resistance of the wire should be less
than 0.8 ohms. Refer to the following table when selecting the proper wire
gauge for your sys tem:
