Replacement Interval Guide
The OEM recommends check and replace if
necessary after 60,000 miles, then every
15,000 miles.
The previous use and service history of the vehicle
must always be taken into account.
Check For Engine Damage
CAUTION: This engine has been identified as a
FREEWHEELING engine in which the possibility of
valve-to-piston damage in the event of a timing belt
failure may be minimal or very unlikely. However, a
precautionary compression check of all cylinders
should be performed.
A compression check of all cylinders should be
performed before removing the cylinder head.

Removal
1.
Remove:
¡
Air cleaner and duct.
¡
Coolant reservoir, move to one side.
¡
Accessory drive belt.
2.
Siphon fluid from PAS reservoir.
3.
Disconnect PAS hoses, cap hose ends and pump
fittings to prevent fluid leakage.
4.
Remove:
¡
PAS pump from bracket.

¡
PAS hose from clip on alternator.
¡
Timing belt center cover
j
3
.
¡
Right hand & left hand camshaft covers.
5.
Remove the tensioner side plate
j
8
.
6.
Turn the tensioner plunger unit and remove from
the pulley arm socket and mounting.
NOTE: DO NOT lose the tapered bush located
between the plunger and the mounting.
7.
Undo tensioner pulley bolt
j
9
and remove the
tensioner pulley and arm.
NOTE: Pulley pivot bush can fall out, use a flat
magnet or tape to hold in place.
Timing marks
j
5
,
j
6
&
j

are shown with timing
belt installed. These marks may NOT be visible.
8.
Remove the timing belt.
NOTE: Check the tensioner length from the
center line of the trunnion to end of the rubber
boot
j
10
. If the length is between 3.2-3.7 ins., the
timing belt can be re-used. If the length is more
than 3.7 ins., a new timing belt must be fitted.
IMPORTANT: For maximum timing belt system
life, replace all tensioners and pulleys during
timing belt replacement.
Installation
1.
Before installing the tensioner plunger unit, retract
the pushrod using the following procedure:
¡
Bend suitable wire, such as a paper-clip, of
0.032 ins. diameter, into peg 1.85 ins. long
j
11
.
¡
Lightly clamp plunger between vise jaws at
s
and leave for five minutes, to allow oil to drain
down toward rubber boot.
¡
Remove plug
j
12
from base of plunger.
¡
Insert small screwdriver through hole in plunger
base and turn clockwise until pushrod is fully
retracted.
¡
Push wire peg
j
11
into vent hole
j
13
and turn
screwdriver counterclockwise until wire peg
locks into pushrod.
¡
Top up the plunger unit with SAE 5W30
synthetic engine oil to bottom of hole.
DO NOT overfill.
¡
Install the plug
j
12
into the plunger, take care it is
fully inserted and sealing the plunger casing.
¡
Clean off any oil spilt on plunger unit.
2.
Clean tensioner pulley and arm and wipe dry,
DO NOT lubricate.
3.
Turn crankshaft in direction of rotation until

aligned.
4.
Turn all camshafts so that machined flats are facing
UP.
5.
Install a camshaft timing clamp No. J38613-A
j
14
onto each camshaft carrier and torque bolts
j
15
to
22 ft. lbs.
NOTE: Remove oil from bolt holes to prevent
threads from stripping.
6.
Erase timing marks
j
6
&
j
7
from camshaft
sprockets.
7.
Loosen camshaft sprocket bolts and gently tap
