Controlled Receptacle
Model URD
FUNCTION
The Controlled Receptacle, model URD, turns 120VAC
appliances ON and OFF (and timed OFF) based on digital
commands received over the power wiring from a remote UPB
(Universal Powerline Bus) controller. UPB controllers and
modules can be freely located anywhere in the home. No
additional wiring is required and no radio frequency signals are
used for communication.

INSTALLATION
The URD is designed for indoor installation in a junction box that
is wired to a readily accessible circuit breaker, per NEC and CEC
electrical standards. To install the URD module:
1. Disconnect power at the circuit breaker.
2. Remove any existing wallplate and receptacle from the outlet
box. Disconnect the wiring to the existing receptacle.
3. Connect the black (Line) wire to the
bottom brass-colored
screw
on the controlled receptacle.
4. Connect the white (Neutral) wire to the
bottom silver-
colored screw
on the controlled receptacle.
5. If available, connect the green (Ground) wire to the
green-
colored screw
on the controlled receptacle.
6. If the application requires a remote wall switch to
activate/deactivate the controlled receptacle, connect the
brown/white wire from the receptacle to the traveler wire that
extends to a model USR Dedicated Remote Switch. Refer to
the wiring diagram for details.
7. If a remote wall switch is not used, cap off the unused
brown/white wire at the receptacle to prevent shorting.
8. Fit the receptacle into the outlet box and secure with
mounting screws. Install the wallplate provided with the
receptacle or leave it off until Configuration is complete.
NOTE: In order to use a standard wallplate, pull off the
Program Switch button extension / light pipe
after
completing
configuration. Save the removable set-up button extension
(e.g. lay it in the bottom of the j-box) so it can be reattached
for future configuration use.
9. Restore power at the circuit breaker.
10. Plug the appliance to be controlled into the
top outlet
of the
receptacle. Turn the appliance power switch ON.
11. If desired, another device can be plugged into the
bottom
outlet
, which is always powered.
CONFIGURATION
1. To configure the URD and assign it to one or more
controllers,
please refer to instructions for the controller
.
2. When configuring a UPB system, it may be necessary to
place the URD in SETUP mode. To do this, press the
illuminated Program Switch (next to the top outlet) five times
rapidly. The indicator will continuously blink GREEN when
the unit is in SETUP mode. To exit SETUP mode, press the
Program Switch once or wait five minutes.
OPERATION
The Controlled Receptacle operates according to commands sent
by the controller. Only the top outlet on the receptacle is
controlled. The bottom outlet will be ON continuously. The
indicator on the receptacle will glow RED when the controlled
outlet is OFF and GREEN when the outlet is ON.
A Timer function is available in the URD. Controller commands
can turn ON the URD and load a preset Timer period. The URD
automatically turns OFF at the end of the period. The available
preset times are: 1 Sec., 5 Sec., 30 Sec., 1 Min., 2 Min., 4 Min.,
10 Min., 20 Min., 30 Min., 40 Min., 50 Min., 1 Hr., 2 Hrs. 3 Hrs.
and 4 Hrs.
When the URD is controlled by a remote switch (model USR),
local response time adjustments are available (300, 450, 600 and
the default 750 mSec) and configured with UPStart configuration
software. Local response time is the time from rocker press to
load response.
