7: Configuring the MP Modem to
Report GPS and I/O Data
The
MP
modem
is
capable
of
reporting
position
and
heading
information
using
the
embedded
GPS
module,
as
well
as
the
status
of
sensors,
gauges,
and
alarms
connected
to
the
I/O
(Input/Output)
port.
The
MP
modem
is
typically
installed
in
a
fleet
of
vehicles
with
the
GPS
and/or
I/O
data
being
sent
to
a
central
office
or
dispatch
for
processing.
This
chapter
describes
how
to
implement
local
reporting
of
GPS
and
I/O
data.
describes
how
to
configure
your
MP
modem
to
exchange
data
with
your
private
network.
GPS configuration and
reporting
GPS
receivers
use
an
array
of
orbiting
satellites
operated
by
the
United
States
Department
of
Defense
to
triangulate
their
coordinates
on
the
Earth’s
surface.
In
order
to
use
the
GPS
module
in
the
MP
modem,
a
GPS
antenna
must
be
connected
to
the
MP
modem.
(The
installation
requires
either
two
antennas—one
Main
RF
and
one
GPS—or
a
single
combination
RF/GPS
antenna.)
