5.7.13 How to use migration mode for changing encrypted communication
You use migration mode when you want to change the settings for encrypted communication
during ongoing operation of a plant.
You can find information on the procedure in the section "How to configure encrypted
communication between the PC stations (Page 116)".
Note
Using migration mode only temporarily
You should use migration mode only as a temporary solution when you want to change the
settings for encrypted communication throughout the plant.
Communication between PC stations with encrypted and unencrypted communication:
● Communication between computers with encrypted and unencrypted communication is
only possible when migration mode is enabled.
● Encrypted communication between PC stations is only possible when the same pre-shared
key is configured. Read the section "How to change the PSK for encrypted
communication (Page 117)"; Reacting to an inconsistent setting for encrypted
communication.
Enabling encrypted communication in a plant
Make sure that the following requirements are met:
● For redundant servers, the redundancy synchronization is completed before each step.
● Process mode is ended on the relevant PC station.
Perform each step for all PC stations in the entire plant before performing a further step.
1. All PC stations in the plant:
Select the following options in the properties of the PC station in Simatic Shell
– "Encrypted communication" check box:
– "Migration mode" check box:

Encrypted communication in a plant
Before you exclusively enable encrypted communication, you need to ensure the following
for all required PC stations:
● Encrypted communication is enabled and migration mode is allowed.
● The same pre-shared key is configured.
2. All PC stations in the plant:
Clear the "Migration mode" check box in the properties of the PC station in Simatic Shell.
