Installation
This chapter describes all the steps you must follow to physically install a P-Series Autopilot System
into your vessel. Each of the standard components of the system are described, both physical
mounting and electrical wiring, and then some final checks are provided. Commonly-used
accessories are also described. Many components come with their own specific instructions, which
also require close attention.
Basic Requirements
Please refer to the Warranty Information
section of this manual before proceeding with installation.
Hazard warning!
Caution!
Extreme caution is necessary whenever using tools powered by alternating current
(AC), and/or from main AC supply circuits, regardless of whether the supply circuits are
indoor, outdoor, ground-fault protected, marine or industrially rated. Water, especially sea
water, is an excellent conductor of electricity, and can complete a path to ground through a
person’s body, causing injury or death, if a tool or component malfunctions or short-circuits.
Battery powered tools are STRONGLY recommended!
If 120v AC tools are to be used, they must be plugged into a circuit that is adequately
protected against ground faults and safety hazards, in accordance with local electrical codes.
THE AUTOPILOT IS INTENDED FOR SINGLE AUTOPILOT INSTALLATION ON THE NMEA2000 BUS
NETWORK. FOR REDUNDANT OR MULTIPLE SPU AND RFU DATA SOURCE, INCLUDE OTHER INDUSTRY
STANDARD AUTOPILOT MODULES CONNECTED TO THE NMEA2000 BUS NETWORK, CONTACT SITEX
FACTORY OR SITEX AUTHORIZED DEALER FOR SPECIFIC APPLICATION SOFTWARE UPGRADE TO THE
SYSTEM.
Steering System
To obtain the best performance from your autopilot system, your boat’s steering system must be in
good working order. The hydraulic system should be bled, and should operate with minimal play.
When installing a Reversing Motor Pump, a Constant Running Pump, or an Engine Driven Pump, it
is recommended that you install shutoff valves on all hydraulic lines between the pump and the
steering system.
Power Supply
For reliable operation of your Autopilot, your boat’s power supply system must have an DC (direct
current) power supply, with and adequate breaker and/or fuse, at a nominal voltage of either 12 or
24 volts. If the circuits are fused, a power switch should also be installed. Ensure that adequate
wire sizes are used to handle the expected maximum currents.
Special Tools
A slot screwdriver with a tip size of ~2.5 mm (0.1”) is required, for tightening the small screws of the
wire clamps in the plugs which mate with the SPU’s pin-receptacle connectors.
Fasteners
In general, fasteners are not supplied with the system – since different surfaces need various types of
fasteners. However, no matter which types are best suited to your vessel, Sitex strongly
