work) is the communication standard for the automa-
tion of PROFIBUS and PROFINET International (PI).
The modular range of functions makes PROFINET a flexible solution for all applica-
tions and markets. The following applications can be implemented using PROFINET:

When planning and starting up a PROFINET network, observe the information and
regulations of the PROFIBUS user organization (PNO) as well as of
PROFIBUS and PROFINET International (PI).

This chapter describes the most important conditions to be observed for planning and
operating a PROFINET network. The list is not complete.
5.1
Network components
Observe the following when selecting the network components of a PROFINET net-
work:
•
Use only industry-standard and PROFINET compliant network components.
•
Make sure that the network components support the desired PROFINET confor-
mance class, e.g. CC-B or CC-C.
•
Use only managed switches.
•
The managed switch must support VLAN tagging according to IEEE802.1Q.
