Operation
SPB Operation Manual
are some general tips for cold weather pumping:
1. Store the machine indoors in locations that have
cold winters, like the northern U.S. and Canada. If
you don’t have a heated shop for the winter, con-
sider renting one.
2. Do not put water in the water tank or the water box
before driving to the job. If possible, contact the
ready-mix company and arrange for the first driver
to be loaded with hot water to fill your water box
and to mix your slurry. Arrange for the last driver to
have enough hot water to allow you to clean out. If
the driver is not allowed to stay while you use his
hot water, at least fill your water tank with his hot
water before he leaves the job, and use it before
it cools.
3. Many pump companies have found that if they in-
sulate the water tank with foam or large insulated
construction blankets, they can fill the tank with hot
water in the morning and have it still be warm at
clean out time. If you choose to do this, however,
you must be sure to keep an eye on the water tank
during the day so you know it is not freezing. You
should also leave the water hose disconnected
and preferably stored in the heated cab until clean
out time.
4. You can prevent moisture in the air system from
freezing only by removing the moisture from the
air. When temperatures are expected to be below
freezing, it is important to drain the water from
the air system each day by opening the petcock
on the bottom of each air tank. You should do this
procedure at the end of the day, preferably in a
warm shop. Many operators prefer to leave the
petcock open until just prior to going out again. If
cold weather operation is expected regularly, you
should have an air dryer installed on the truck air
system.
5. If you are expecting cold weather for extended pe-
riods of time, such as winter in the northern United
States and Canada, you should change your oil to
a thinner viscosity type, such as an ISO VG 32,
which will give you a lower pour point. Be aware,
however, that this oil cannot protect the compo-
nents to as high a temperature as the standard oil
shipped with your unit (ISO VG 46). Another option
is to preheat the oil before beginning the pour. This
will require that you arrive at the job early enough
to do the procedure. Allow about 10 or 15 extra
minutes.
Preheating the hydraulic oil
With load-sensing hydraulic systems and pressure cut-
off hydraulic pumps, the oil can no longer be heated
with the boom hydraulic system by pressuring out a
boom function. The only thing we might suggest if you
are forced to pump on a cold day, is that you start the
electric motor at least 15 minutes prior to unfolding the
boom. The hydraulic tank is relatively small and just
moving the oil around for fifteen minutes will generate
enough heat to allow boom movement.
Preheating the boom pipeline
You can preheat your pipeline to help get the slurry
through without freezing by blowing hot air from the bot-
tom of the pipeline up through the boom or from top to
bottom. The length of time required to preheat the boom
will vary depending on the temperature of the air being
blown and the volume of air movement (CFS). The hot-
ter the air and the greater the volume, the less time will
be required. Some possible sources of hot air might be
a torpedo type heater directed into the pipeline or the
exhaust of a truck or other diesel engine piped through
a hose and into the pipeline.
