Operation
SPB Operation Manual
Pumping Constraints
Wind restrictions
Boom damage. High winds can dam-
age the boom. Maximum wind for
operation is 44 MPH and for out of
operation is 93 MPH
Do not operate the boom if the wind is blowing over 44
MPH. When the boom is out of operation, boom dam-
age can occur if the wind is higher than 93 MPH. This
wind speed applies to storage in either the vertical or
horizontal position.
Time constraints
Tell the pump operator to always keep the hopper at
least half full, so if you have trouble he will be able to
stroke the pump periodically. If anything goes wrong on
the unit while it is pumping, you only have a short time,
especially if the temperature is extreme, to solve it be-
fore the concrete will begin to set. You will have less
time with old concrete on a hot day and more time with
fresh concrete on a cool, cloudy day. If you know you
will need more than 15 minutes, clean out before you
begin repairs. If concrete is beginning to set, you will
have to clean out quickly and efficiently. Keep moving,
and you should be able to get the boom and pipeline
cleaned out. Old concrete and hot days make for the
worst conditions, in which the concrete sets extremely
quickly. This is called “flashing,” and if it happens, you
may lose some pipe.
If you are pumping in very cold conditions (below
+10° F), the concrete can freeze quickly. During a delay,
the machine will act like the concrete has set but may
actually be frozen. If your boom and pipeline are not
insulated, it is best to not pump on very cold days.
Stop the dripping concrete while moving
When you need to swing a full boom over personnel, a
finished slab, or equipment, it is your responsibility to
protect the area below. Air activated concrete shut-off
valves (air cuff) are available to stop the flow of con
-
crete when the pump is off. To activate (close) the air
cuff, press the Air Cuff switch “up”. To turn off (open)
the air cuff off, return the switch to the neutral position.

The concrete pump will NOT shut-
off automatically when the air cuff is
activated.

.
Be sure the hose shut-off is activated
before swinging boom over workers
or property.
Moving the boom near forms
Be careful when moving the boom near forms. This is
especially important when you will be lowering a hose
inside the form for a wall or column. It is possible to
catch part of the hose, a safety cable, etc. on the form
and break the form. If you are pulling the boom straight
up out of the form, as you should be, you can tell that
something is caught if the boom stops moving or hose
appears to stretch. If this happens, stop the boom im-
mediately, and lower it enough to take the tension off
the boom. Have the hose man free the hose or cable
from the obstruction before continuing.
Delays
There will be delays. Sometimes you will have to wait
for concrete, sometimes the workers will need to fin
-
ish the next form to be pumped, another time maybe a
form will fail. You can make good use of this idle time
by washing pipe, clamps and gaskets that have been
removed from the delivery system or by performing any
number of miscellaneous tasks. The important thing to
