Start up of cassettes
Example of a basic cleaning protocol for Hydrosart
®
Ultrafilters:
Step 1:
Flush the filter cassettes with isotonic saline for 5 min. at room temperature.
Conditions:
p
in
= 36.3 psi|2.5 bar|250 kPa
p
ret
= 0 psi|0 bar|0 kPa
p
per
= open
Step 2:
Recirculate 1 N NaOH at room temperature for 10 min; then flush the filter cassettes
with the same batch of sodium hydroxide.
Conditions:
p
in
= 29 psi|2.0 bar|200 kPa
p
ret
= 0 psi|0 bar|0 kPa
p
per
= open
Step 3:
Flush with purified water until the pH is neutral.
Conditions:
p
in
= 29 psi|2.0 bar|200 kPa
p
ret
= 14.5 psi|1.0 bar|100 kPa
p
per
= open
2.8 Cassette Disinfection
Always disinfect clean filter cassettes only. Formaldehyde can denature proteins.
As a result the protein might be irreversibly fixed to the membrane, which will
result in flux decay.

Adjust the following pressures:
p

= 29 psi|2.0 bar|200 kPa
p
ret
= 7.3 psi|0.5 bar|50 kPa
p
per
= 0 psi|0 bar|0 kPa
Recirculate the disinfectant through the cassette(s).
The disinfectant must flow through both permeate outlets.
Afterwards, flush the filter cassette(s) with purified water as described in
“Flushing the Filter Cassettes”
.
