Chapter 3. Working with SNMP printers

SNMP support

Currently, InfoPrint Manager supports Simple Network Management Protocol
(SNMP) V1. However, companies are shipping printers with SNMP V3.

If you configure your printer to use SNMP Version 3, you need to turn off the
InfoPrint Manager SNMP support by specifying

for the

use-snmp

actual

destination attribute.

Note:

If you configure your printer to use SNMP V3 and turn on the InfoPrint
Manager SNMP support, it could impact the overall performance of the
InfoPrint Manager SNMP support.

If you specified the

destination-tcpip-internet-address

actual destination

attribute, the

use-snmp

actual destination attribute is set to

True

by default.

About SNMP communication

For network printers that work with Simple Network Management Protocol
(SNMP) and the standard printer management information block (MIB) RFC 1759,
the InfoPrint Manager server can use SNMP to automatically:

v

Set the default of several InfoPrint Manager actual destination attributes in the
printer to the values returned in the standard printer MIB. The actual
destination attributes pertain to trays, media, bins, plexes, and sides. This
process is called

smart–defaulting

the attributes.

v

Detect, report, and recover from printer problems for several conditions, even if
no jobs are currently being printed.

v

Assess device specific information directly.

v

Execute device commands directly on the device.

With PTF UO00979 , InfoPrint Manager adds support for SNMP Version 3
(SNMPv3). This version enhances the security of SNMP communications between
InfoPrint Manager and printers, and it includes encrypted and authenticated
management traffic and protected remote configuration and device status
messages.

SNMPv3 supports three levels of security:

v

Minimum

- Without authentication and privacy.

v

Medium

- With authentication, but without privacy.

v

Maximum

- With authentication and privacy.

To support these three security levels, new SNMPv3 actual destination attributes
are added. See “Procedures” on page 40 for more information.

Smart-defaulting actual destination attributes

The InfoPrint Manager server can automatically smart-default an actual destination
attribute for an SNMP printer

only

if an InfoPrint Manager user does one of these:
