USING THE QUIET FEATURE
The quiet feature lets you talk and listen to peo-
ple who are using other radios set to the same
channel and quiet code as your radio. This is
like having a sub-channel within a channel, giv-
ing you greater communication flexibility.
When you set a quiet code (there are 38 to
choose from) and turn on this feature, the radio
transmits a tone with your transmission. This
tone is too low for you to hear, but other radios
can detect it. This prevents radios which are not
set to the same channel and quiet code from in-
terfering with your transmissions or reception.
Follow these steps to set a quiet code.
1. Repeatedly press
MODE
until
QUIET
and
the previously set quiet code appear and
flash.
2. Rotate
CHANNEL/QUIET/VOLUME
clock-
wise or counterclockwise until you see the
code number (
1–38
) you want to use.
QUIET
flashes for 5 seconds after you stop
rotating
CHANNEL/QUIET/VOLUME
, then the
selected channel number reappears.

OPERATION
INSTALLING BATTERIES
Your radio uses an optional Ni-MH recharge-
able battery pack (RSU No. 12016481, avail-
able through your local RadioShack store) or
three alkaline AA batteries (not supplied) for
power.
Cautions:
• Use only fresh batteries of the required size
and recommended type.
• Do not mix old and new batteries, different
types of batteries (standard, alkaline, or
rechargeable), or rechargeable batteries of
different capacities.
Note: You need an optional desktop charger
(Cat. No. 21-1830), to charge the battery pack
before you can use it. Follow the directions sup-
plied with the optional desktop charger to
charge the battery pack.
Be sure the radio is off, then remove the belt
clip. Use a coin or a screwdriver to loosen the
screw on the battery compartment cover, then
slide the cover down and off and install the bat-
tery pack or batteries as shown.
Note: If you will not be using the radio for sever-
al months, remove the batteries.
