Step 1. Unpacking the box
The SmartStor Zero box contains the following items:
SmartStor Zero Unit
Quick Start Guide
Screws for disk drives (1 package, 12 screws)
RJ-45 Ethernet cable
Power cord
CD with ON software, SmartNAVI software, and Quick
Start Guide.
The following operating systems support ON and Smart-
NAVI:
Windows 7
Windows Vista
Windows XP
Mac OS 10.5.2 or higher (must have Java 6 SE update)
Step 2. Connecting the power cable and Ether-
net cable
To connect the power cable:
Attach the power supply adapter to the back of the Smart-
Stor enclosure. Attach the power cord to the power supply
and plug the other end into the power source.
See Figure 2.
To connect the SmartStor to your network:
1. Attach one end of the network cable to the RJ45 network
connection. See Figure 2.
2. Attach the other end of the network cable to your Ethernet
hub or switch.

Step 5. Powering on SmartStor Zero
1. On the front of the SmartStor, press the power button until
the LEDs light up (about one second).
See Figure 1.
2. It takes about a minute to boot the SmartStor. When fully
booted:
The System Status LED turns green. See Figure 1.
The buzzer beeps one time.
Step 6. Inserting the CD and installing the
software applications
ON software manages your SmartStor system.
SmartNAVI software performs file backups and restora-
tions.
Installation: ON for Windows
To install the ON software onto a Windows PC:
1. Insert the CD into your PC’s CD-ROM.
2. Double-click the Install option.
3. Click the Next button to begin installation. Follow the
on-screen prompts to complete the installation.
The installer adds the ON icon to the:
Start menu
Application tray
Installation: ON for Macintosh
To install the ON software on a Macintosh PC:
1. Insert the CD into your PC’s CD-ROM.
2. Double-click the SmartStor Zero icon on the desktop.
3. Click the Next button to begin installation. Follow the
on-screen prompts to complete the installation.
With the Launch ON box checked, the Promise Advanced
Storage Manager opens on your PC desktop.
The installer adds the ON icon to the Dock.
Setting up the SmartStor
The ON software automatically sets up your SmartStor and
opens the Network Share window on your desktop.
The Public folders include:
Music – for your music files
Picture – for your photo files
Video – for your video files
The Recycler folder is the same as the Recycle folder on
Windows or the Trash on Mac OS.
The admin folders include:
homes – your personal files
BACKUPDATA_admin – created when you perform a file
backup
Note that you can set the Network Share window not to
open automatically in the ON settings. See Additional
Functions, ON Settings.
Double-click ON icon via Windows System Tray or Mac
Finder Menu to open Network Share on desk-top of
Windows or Mac.
NOTE: For Mac OS you must double-click using the right
mouse button.
