Fig. 271: Tightening the central bolt
3.
Continue tightening the central bolt with the
long lever until the
STOP
marking is aligned
with the guide line. The bolt is now securely
tightened.
4.
Perform the steps for checking the retaining pin
and for fitting the cover.
>
Please see chapter "Mounting the wheel" on
page 316.
e
Have an authorized Porsche dealer loosen the
central bolt again as soon as possible and then
retighten it to the specified torque of
442 ftlb. (600 Nm)
using a suitable torque
wrench.
Porsche recommends an authorized Porsche
dealer, as they have trained technicians and the
necessary parts and tools.
Driving on racetracks (e.g. sports
driving training, motorsport
events)
Compared to normal road use, the vehicle is sub-
jected to disproportionately higher loads when driv-
ing on racetracks.
For this reason, the following instructions for the
central lock also need to be observed during race-
track operation.
WARNING
Racetrack operation
Disregarding checking, maintenance and replace-
ment measures along with incorrectly carrying out
installation instructions can result in component
failure and accidents.
This is especially true when a high total mileage is
reached in racetrack operation.
e
Make sure to use perfectly functioning tools and
correctly clicking torque wrenches.
e
Always ask about the current requirements and
usage regulations before driving on racetracks:
Contact an authorized Porsche dealer.
e
Check the tightening torque of the central bolts
before and, if necessary, during and after driving
on racetracks.
e
Follow the described procedure exactly when
changing a wheel.
>
Please see chapter "Changing wheels with a
central lock" on page 311.
e
Perform the specified re-greasing procedures
during every wheel change. The high tempera-
tures result in faster grease consumption.
Alternatively, have a second, greased set of bolts
available.
e
Never drive with a defective central bolt retainer.
e
Never tighten the wheels using emergency
fastening.
e
Each time after racetrack operation, check all
components of the central lock, such as the
central bolt, retainer, wheel, wheel hub, wheel
bolts and brake disk for wear and damage, and
replace them if in dubious condition.
e
Replace the axle components subjected to heavy
strain at the intervals specified by Porsche. In-
quire about the current specifications before
driving on racetracks.
e
Other parts, such as ball joints, rubber mounts,
etc., whose wear may alter vehicle handling, for
example, must be checked and replaced without
delay if in dubious condition.
