Porsche Stability Manage-
ment (PSM)
PSM is an active control system for helping to stabi-
lize the vehicle in extreme driving situations. It is
automatically enabled when the engine starts. PSM
makes use of the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS),
engine drag torque control (MSR), Traction Control
(TC) and Electronic Stability Control (ESC), as well as
the Hydraulic Brake Assist (HBA) and Automatic
Brake Differential (ABD) functions.
e
Always have PSM switched on during “normal”
driving operation. This particularly applies in wet
conditions.
The events below inform the driver of the PSM
control operations:
– PSM warning light on the instrument panel
flashes.
– Hydraulic noises are audible.
– Vehicle decelerations and modification of
steering wheel forces through targeted brake
intervention.
– Reduced engine power.
– Pulsing brake pedal and changes in brake pedal
position when braking.
To achieve full vehicle deceleration, the foot
pressure must be increased after the brake pedal
starts to pulse.
Automatic brake differential (ABD)
If one wheel on a driven axle starts to spin, it is braked
so that the other wheel on the same axle can be
driven.
Traction Control (TC)
Traction Control prevents wheels from spinning
through targeted adjustment of engine power,
thereby ensuring good road-holding ability and
stable vehicle handling.
Engine drag torque control (MSR)
In the event of excessive slip, engine drag torque
control prevents all the driven wheels from locking up
during overrun. This also applies to downshifts on
slippery road surfaces.
Switching off PSM
PSM can be switched off in 2 stages:
– Stage 1
ESC OFF
:
Switch off Electronic Stability Control (ESC).
– Stage 2
ESC+TC OFF
:
Also switch off Traction Control (TC).
However, it may be advantageous to switch off PSM
temporarily in exceptional situations:
– On a loose surface and in deep snow.
– When “rocking the vehicle free”.
Switching off Electronic Stability Control
(ESC)
Fig. 149: ESC OFF button in the center console
b
Indicator light on the ESC+TC OFF button is off.
e
Press button
and keep it pressed for
approx. 1 second.
Electronic Stability Control (ESC) is switched off.
The button‘s light indicator and the PSM OFF
warning light in the instrument panel light up.
A message stating that Electronic Stability
Control is switched off appears on the
multifunction display. A beep also sounds.
WARNING
Loss of Control of the
Vehicle
Despite the advantages of PSM, it is still the driver’s
responsibility to adapt his driving style and driving
maneuvers to the prevailing road and weather condi-
tions, as well as the traffic situation.
The increased safety provided should not induce you
to take greater risks with your safety. The limits set
by the laws of driving physics cannot be overcome,
even with PSM.
PSM does not reduce the risk of accidents owing to
an inappropriate driving speed.
WARNING
Absent PSM Support
There is no stabilising brake control in either of the
switch-off stages (even when the brakes are used).
e
Always have PSM switched on during “normal”
driving operation. This particularly applies in wet
conditions.
