Basic playback
Important
• The p r ocedu r e fo r setting the r eceive r ope r ation
mode diffe r s fo r the r emote cont r ols included with
the SC-LX83 and SC-LX73. Fo r the SC-LX83’s r emote
cont r ol, set the r emote cont r ol ope r ation selecto r
switch to
RECEIVER
. Fo r the SC-LX73’s r emote
cont r ol, p r ess the button. When “set the
r emote cont r ol to the r eceive r ope r ation mode” is
indicated in these inst r uctions, use the r espective
p r ocedu r e desc r ibed above.
Playing a source
He r e a r e the basic inst r uctions fo r playing a sou r ce (such
as a DVD disc) with you r home theate r system.
1 Switch on your system components and receiver.
Make su r e that the TV’s video input is set to this r eceive r .
2 Set the remote control to the receiver operation
mode.
3 Select the input function you want to play.
You can use the input function buttons on the r emote
cont r ol, INPUT SELECT , o r the f r ont panel INPUT
SELECTOR dial.

4 Press AUTO/ALC/DIRECT (AUTO SURR/ALC/
STREAM DIRECT) to select ‘AUTO SURROUND’ and
start playback of the source.

If you’ r e playing a Dolby Digital o r DTS su rr ound sound
sou r ce, you should hea r su rr ound sound. If you a r e
playing a ste r eo sou r ce, you will only hea r sound f r om the
f r ont left/ r ight speake r s in the default listening mode.

It is possible to check on the f r ont panel display whethe r
o r not multi-channel playback is being pe r fo r med
p r ope r ly. Fo r details, see

When using a su rr ound back speake r , 2
D+PLIIx
MOVIE
is displayed when playing Dolby Digital signals,
and
DTS+Neo:6
is displayed when playing DTS 5.1-
channel signals.
If the display does not co rr espond to the input signal and
listening mode, check the connections and settings.
5 Use the volume control to adjust the volume level.
Tu r n down the volume of you r TV so that all sound is
coming f r om the speake r s connected to this r eceive r .
Playing a source with HDMI connection
• Set the remote control to the receiver operation
mode, then use INPUT SELECT to select the HDMI input
you’ve connected to (for example, HDMI 1).
You can also pe r fo r m the same ope r ation by using the
INPUT SELECTOR dial on the f r ont panel o r by p r essing
HDMI on the r emote cont r ol r epeatedly.

audio output f r om you r TV (no sound will be hea r d
f r om this r eceive r ).
• If the video signal does not appea r on you r TV, t r y
adjusting the r esolution settings on you r component
o r display. Note that some components (such as
video game units) have r esolutions that may not be
conve r ted. In this case, use an analog video
connection.
Selecting the multichannel analog inputs
If you have connected a decode r o r a DVD playe r as
above, you must select the analog multichannel inputs
fo
r su rr ound sound playback.

1 Make sure you have set the playback source to the
proper output setting.
Fo r example, you might need to set you r DVD playe r to
output multichannel analog audio.
2 Set the remote control to the receiver operation
mode, then use INPUT SELECT to select MULTI CH IN.
You can also use the INPUT SELECTOR dial on the f r ont
panel.
• Depending on the DVD playe r you’ r e using, the
analog output level of the subwoofe r channel may be
too low. In this case, the output level of the subwoofe r
can be inc r eased by 10 dB in the Multi Ch In Setup
in Other Setup . Fo r details, see Multi Channel Input
Setup on page 115.

2 You may need to check the digital audio output settings on you r DVD playe r o r digital satellite r eceive r . It should be set to output Dolby Digital,
DTS and 88.2 kHz / 96 kHz PCM (2 channel) audio, and if the r e is an MPEG audio option, set this to conve r t the MPEG audio to PCM.

3 • When playback f r om the multichannel inputs is selected, only the volume and channel levels can be set.
