Concept of the phyCORE-i.MX Carrier Board
The phyCORE-i.MX Carrier Board provides a flexible development platform enabling quick and easy
start-up and subsequent programming of the phyCORE-i.MX Single Board Computer module. The Carrier
Board design allows easy connection of additional expansion boards featuring various functions that
support fast and convenient prototyping and software evaluation. The Carrier Board is compatible with all
phyCORE-i.MX modules through a phyMAPPER card as shown in Figure 11. The Mapper board adapts
signals from module to the Carrier Board.

This modular development platform concept depicted in Figure 12 below includes the following
components:
•
The
i.MX31 SBC Module
– contains the i.MX31 processor and all applicable SBC circuitry such as
DDR SDRAM, Flash, PHYs, and transceivers to name a few.
•
The
i.MX
Carrier Board
– which offers all essential components and connectors for start-up and
connection to processor peripherals.
•
The
phyMAP-i.MX31
– maps the signals from the phyCORE-i.MX31 module to the i.MX Carrier
Board. The phyMAP-i.MX31 boards allow all PHYTEC i.MX SBC modules to connect to the i.MX
Carrier Board.
•
The
Expansion Bus Connectors
– are two high-density Molex connectors providing access to all of
the signals from the SBC module while mounted on the Carrier Board. The pin assignment of the
expansion bus depends entirely on the pin-out of the Mapper (and the module) mounted on the
Carrier Board.
•
Various
Expansion Boards
, connecting via the Expansion Bus Connector, offer supplemental I/O
functions as well as peripheral support devices for specific functions offered by the controller
populating the SBC module. A bare expansion board (depicted in Figure 12) allows easy access to all
Expansion Bus Connector signals via the
patch field
. In addition several header connectors on the
Carrier Board allow for easy connection to particular signals via
patch cables
.
Figure 12 below illustrates the modular development platform concept.
