Air Transport
When transporting the Permobil wheelchair by aircraft, there are three important things to keep in mind:
1. Batteries
Gel batteries : In most situations, gel batteries do not need to be removed from the wheelchair.
If the wheelchair has an automatic main fuse, this must be set to the Off position.
Acid batteries : Most airlines require that acid batteries be removed from the wheelchair and transported in special
containers that the airline may provide.
2. Wheelchair’s size and weight
The wheelchair’s weight and size are important to keep in mind depending on the type of aircraft in which the
wheelchair will be transported. Smaller aircraft may not be able to accommodate large or heavy wheelchairs.
Check with the airline to see what rules apply.

3. Preventing damage
During air transportation, the wheelchair is placed with other goods in a confined space. It is therefore important to
take preventative action to minimise transit damage to the wheelchair.
Cover the control panel with soft, shock-absorbing material (foam plastic of similar) and fold it in towards the back-
rest. Protect other protruding objects in a similar manner. Tape any loose cables to the seat or covers.

airline well in advance of your travelling date.
