MPEG
A technology that efficiently compresses digital video data. MPEG2 is one of this technology
with outstanding image quality and is used in DVD-Video (
) and other media.
Another related technology, MPEG1, uses a lower compression rate than MPEG2, and is used
in Video CD (
). There is also an MPEG4 standard, which is designed for
distribution of video with low picture quality or high compression rates through telephone lines
and other lines with low communication speeds.

On this computer, MPEG2 files are played using WinDVD, and MPEG4 files are played
using Windows
®
Media Player. In some cases, it may be necessary to install codecs
separately.

NTFS
– NT File System
A file system for recording and managing files and data on Windows NT

XP. Before NTFS, FAT (File Allocation Table) was the file system used in DOS
and Windows, but NTFS offers far greater robustness, security, and performance.

Partition
A region created on a hard disk. One or more partitions can be created on a single hard disk.
With multiple partitions, one disk can be operated as though it is more than one disk. For
example, if a 20GB hard disk is divided into two partitions – a 10GB C Drive and a 10GB D
Drive – then the C drive can operate Windows and other system and application software,
while the D drive can be used for storing data.
