Tools needed
Materials needed
• Power saw
• Hammer
• Level
• Power drill and bits
• Grade stakes
• 2x4 Bracing posts
• Nails or screws for
toenailing and bracing
• Post hole digger
(if burying posts)
• Tape measure
• Carpenter’s pencil
• Concrete and gravel
(if burying posts)
• Post mount (if mounting
to surface)
Check local ordinances and regulations before building your pergola.
If mounting posts to the surface, determine the local guidelines and
approved fasteners for doing so. Before digging any holes, contact your
local utility companies to mark any underground cables and pipelines.
STEP 1
Determine the desired height of your pergola and your method for
securing the posts. The standard pergola height is 8 ft. The posts are
12 ft. tall. If you are securing the posts by mounting to the surface, you
may need to cut the posts to your desired height.
Note: You will need at least two people to achieve this assembly.
STEP 4
Set one post at each marked location and brace with stakes or 2x4s.
Ensure the posts are plumb, and secure to ground using your chosen
method.
STEP 5
Measure 4-1/4 in. from the top of each post and make a mark for beam
placement. Place the first beam against two posts, notch side up, and
align with the marks. Ensure the outermost notch on each side of the
beam is on the outside of each post. Drive a positioning screw through
the beam into the first post. Check for level and notch placement and
correct if necessary. Drive a positioning screw through the beam into
the second post (fig. 3).
STEP 2
Note: Post placement
needs to be precise.
Mark post placement by
building a square of the
outside beams and joists on
the ground in your desired
location. To do so, place
two joists on the ground
approximately 10 ft. apart.
Slide one beam onto the
joists, matching the outer-
most notches in the joists
with the outermost notches
in the beams. Repeat on the
other side, completing the
square (fig. 1).
STEP 3
The posts will be located in
each corner of the square
(fig. 2). Mark post placement
with stakes or spray paint.
Take apart the square.
