5. SLEUTH APPLICATION
Sleuth is a simplified user interface for the Detective X and is started from launcher (see Chapter 3). Sleuth
provides for a very limited set of common user operations. This limits the ability of users to deviate from
prescribed CONOPS. Sleuth minimizes opportunity for error in situations where operators must multi-task to
quickly and accurately assess the threat level posed by an item of primary concern (IPC). Because of its limited
user interface, Sleuth can greatly simplify training protocols for operators as well.
Sleuth depends on the more feature-rich Detective X software application described in Chapter 4. Many
settings entered in the Detective X software application carry over to the operation of Sleuth. It is
recommended that one study Chapter 4 to understand the available system settings prior to deploying
instruments for Sleuth-based operation.
Sleuth adds some special features created specifically for its targeted audience. These features are not
currently available in the traditional Detective X software application. Sleuth has special data handling
capabilities to ensure all survey data collected is concise and unambiguous. Sleuth also allows data collection
to be paused such that other potentially interfering measurements of the IPC can be made without spoiling
a time-consuming gamma ray spectrum acquisition. Sleuth also includes features that allow the operator to
optimally position the Detective X prior to starting data collection.
5.1 USER INPUT
Users interact with the Sleuth application only by tapping the large touchscreen buttons with a finger or
stylus. When in Sleuth mode, the (N) and (S) buttons (see Figure 28) on the device handle are disabled.
Some screens allow the user to capture alphanumeric data that will be stored in the N42.42 file along with
the radiological measurement data. If the user has large hands, it may be easier to use the supplied stylus,
which is tethered to the carrying strap (Figure 14).
5.2 SLEUTH STARTUP AND DATA FILE MANAGEMENT
The Sleuth software application is accessible through the Launcher interface described in Chapter 3.
Instruments that will only be used in Sleuth mode can be configured to automatically start Sleuth during a
system reboot/power-up. This is accomplished by entering a checkmark in the box next to the Sleuth entry
on the Launcher screen.
