Deployment considerations
It is important to ensure that your hydrophone is deployed in a safe and
reliable manner to prevent damage to the instrument and ensure high
quality data. This section provides information on basic deployment
considerations and describes a number of possible deployment
configurations.
Rope Deployment Line
When lowering the icListen over the side of a dock or a vessel, a rope
should be attached to the hydrophone to avoid placing stress on the
connector and prevent equipment loss. A rope can be tied around the
body of the hydrophone with secured hitch knots e.g., clove or constrictor.
Cable ties or tape can be used to secure the rope in place if needed. The
cable should only be used as a secondary line if the rope
fails. Deploying the hydrophone with only a cable can
weaken or break the connector.
Guards
Guards are highly recommended for deployments where
there is a possibility of the sensor being damaged during
deployment or recovery.
Cable Bend Radius
Ensure you know the bend radius of each cable
and follow the appropriate guidelines. Exceeding the bend radius of a cable will damage
the internal connections and can cause permanent or intermittent connection loss. See the
Maintenance, Storage and Cable Care
Protect Connector Pins
During autonomous deployments, the shorting plug should be used to ensure the pins on the
connector are protected from the ocean environment. For cabled deployments, the connection
between cables should be properly seated and locking sleeves secured.
