subset of the standard lp.ini parameters are supported and new parameters have been
added to this set. The new parameters have been added because concepts such as form
definitions, page definitions, etc. are unknown in the standard lp world of printing.
The process called lpd, which runs as a background process or daemon on the PRIS-
MAproduction computer waits for a connection to be established from the network by a cli-
ent computer running an lpr command. This connection is used to send data and job infor-
mation to a specified printer queue on the PRISMAproduction host. The printer queue name
is used to find information in the lp.ini file . The received data and job information are stored
in the spool directory during the transmission phase associated with the configured printer
queue. Once the data has been fully and correctly received, any specified submission com-
mand is called and the data is then used to create the print job in the PRISMAproduction
spool.
6.19.2 Submitting a Print Job with ”lpr”
Syntax:
lpr [options] print_file ...
Description:
The command "lpr" (line printer request) sends print jobs to a logical printer. The physical
printer can be connected to either the local or a remote host.
Options:
-P[printer name]
The logical printer name as descriptor in the printcap
file.This parameter is required
-T[title]
The title string is passed to the spool
-J[job name]
If title is not specified, the job name is passed to the spool
-r
Remove the file after printing
-q
Queue the job but do not print it
-\#
Number of copies (the backslash is needed to prevent the
interpretation of the "#" sign as the end of a command)
Example:
lpr –PPS700 –Jreport22 -\#3 /u/printjobs/report22
This command sends the local print file /u/printjobs/report22 to the print server that is con-
figured for logical printer PS700, and generates a print job with the given job name. Three
copies of the job will be printed.
