NuTone two channel stereo volume controls are designed to be used with
any standard 8 Ohm stereo amplifier and the NuTone radio intercom Master
station such as IM-3303 or IM-4406.
INSTALLATION
The amplifier should be turned off before the installation is begun. Also,
the volume and tone controls should be set to their minimum position.
For distances up to 20 feet from the music source, (amplifier), 22 AWG
wire such as IW-2 can be used. For distances up to 100 feet, 18 AWG wire
such as S-143 could be used. For distances greater than 100 feet, 16 AWG
wire should be used.
Refer to Table 1 for choosing proper amplifier power and speaker loads
for a particular installation. In this table, the first column shows the possible
8 Ohm stereo or mono audio amplifier power rating and the Mono IM-3303
and IM-4406 Radio Intercom Master Stations which can be used with the
stereo volume controls. The volume controls are not designed to be used
with 4 Ohm stereo/mono audio amplifiers. The second and third columns
show the total number of various speaker(s) per channel that can be
connected through the 75 Watt SVC-101 Volume Control to a particular
amplifier power rating in a stereo or mono system. Columns four and five
show the total number of speaker(s) which can be connected to the 150
Watt SVC-102 Volume Control per channel in a stereo application. For
example, if you have a 75 watt, 8 Ohm stereo amplifier, then, as per column
two, you can connect
one
8 Ohm speaker per channel through SVC-101.
Also, as per column three, you can connect
one, two or three
, 25 Ohm
speaker(s) such as IS-903, IS-905, IS-920, IS-921, or IS-930 per channel to
the same amplifier.
If more than one 25 Ohm speaker is to be connected to the volume
control, they can be wired in parallel. Although series connection is also
possible, it is not advisable because in case one speaker connection is open
or the speaker is dead, the entire system will be dead.
Strip about 1" of the wire insulation from each speaker wire. Connect
positive wires together using wire nuts (not supplied). Then, connect
negative wires together. Insert the wires into the appropriate terminals of the
terminal block on the Stereo Volume Control.
Note that only
one
900 Series 25 Ohm Music Speaker, such as IS-903,
can be connected to either the IM-3303 or the IM-4406 Master Station. The
music speaker takes the place of the intercom speaker
and can be used for music reproduction only.
Refer to Table 1
. The same analogy holds when using the 150 Watt
SVC-102 Stereo Volume Control. As shown in column four, only
one
8 Ohm
speaker can be connected per channel for a particular amplifier. As per
column five,
one, two or three
25 Ohm speaker(s) can be connected per
channel in parallel as before.
Figure 1
shows a typical installation in which a NuTone Radio Intercom
Master station such as the IM-4406 or an 8 Ohm stereo amplifier is
connected to speaker(s).
Figure 2
shows the rear view of the volume control. Wire connection
should be made as follows:
STEREO APPLICATION
To INPUT side of the volume control
:
The four wires (two wires per channel) from the stereo amplifier should
be connected to RIGHT and LEFT, PLUS (+) and MINUS (-) terminals on
the volume control.
To OUTPUT side of the volume control
:
A 2-conductor wire should be connected to PLUS (+) AND MINUS (-)
terminals and then to the RIGHT speaker. Same procedure should be
followed for LEFT speaker using LEFT (+) and MINUS (-) OUTPUTS.
TESTING
The system should now be tested for proper functioning. The volume
control has nine steps with an off position. The knob should be rotated to
second or third position. The main amplifier should be turned on and its
volume turned up slowly. Sound should be heard from the speaker(s). If
not, the amplifier should be turned off immediately and all wiring
connections checked thoroughly, including polarity of connections.
If sound is heard from the speaker(s), the system is working. The Tone
and Volume control settings on the amplifier should now be adjusted as
desired. The volume control setting on the stereo volume control can also
be set at desired position now.
CAUTION:
The INPUT and OUTPUT connections should not be reversed!

MONO APPLICATION
In a mono application, such as when using the IM-4406, only one set
of terminals may be used.
If multiple speakers are to be connected to a channel (please refer to
Table 1), they can be terminated at the volume control using wire nuts (not
supplied), as explained above.
MOUNTING
The volume control should be mounted at a convenient height, on a
single gang electrical box of 18 cubic inches or greater, preferably with
open back. Snap the inner plastic plate onto the mounting bracket.
Terminate the wires from the stereo amplifier and speakers on the back
of the volume control; secure the mounting bracket on the elctrical box
with screws provided. Mount the front cover using screws provided and
then the knob.
For the IM-3303 or IM-4406, the right or the left channel terminals
may be used. The right and left channel terminals must be used in a
stereo system. Proper polarity must be observed.
