• The MAC address module provides the unique node identification within
a network. Its address is read by the system only at initial power up, after
power cycling, or a software startup, restart, reboot, or reset.
• Duplicated addresses can occur when:
— a MAC address module is replaced in a switch (for example, switch
A) and switch A does not undergo a manual or a system reset
— the MAC address module from switch A replaces the one in switch B
— as soon as switch B undergoes a manual or a system reset, restart, or
reboot before switch A does, then switch B’s new address is the
same as switch A’s former address because the former address itself
had not actually been replaced yet
• Unlike most other hardware parts of the system, there is no software
command associated with preparing the MAC address module for
removal.
• The alarm 7012 0053 indicates when a MAC address module has failed.
• There is no software or hardware alarm for removing the MAC address
module itself or leaving its slot empty.
