SynC
“Oscillator Synchronization” involves using the signal from one oscillator
to
restart
another oscillator. When sync is applied, the basic pitch of
Oscillator 1 is locked to that of Oscillator 2 (the “sync” oscillator). As
the relative pitch of the synchronized oscillator is varied, this will be
perceived as a dramatic change in timbre.
With Oscillator Sync, it can be useful to have the Osc Ctrl amount
modulated from any of the Morph assign sources, or by the Modulation
Envelope. this will generate a signal with continuously varied harmonic
content.
the Sync configuration has no
OSC2/PITCH
settings.
M
S-Wave waveforms and Samples have no Sync configuration
DEtUnE
With the
Detune
configuration Oscillator 2 provides a copy of Oscillator
1, which can be both coarsely tuned in semi tone intervals and fine
tuned in small increments.
OSC2/PITCH
adjusts the pitch of Oscillator 2 in semi tones, and
OSC
CTRL
is used for fine tuning within a range of four semitones.
M
S-Wave waveforms and Samples have no Detune configuration.
MIX SInE, tRIAngLE, SAW AnD SQUARE
With the
Sine
,
Triangle
,
Saw
and
Square
Mix configurations Oscillator 2
provides one of these four basic waveforms. Oscillator 2 can be mixed
with Oscillator 1 using
OSC CTRL
.
OSC2/PITCH
controls the pitch of Oscillator 2 in semitone steps, ranging
from 0 to 48.
MIX BELL
A special “bell oscillator” can be mixed with Oscillator 1, using the
Mix
Bell
oscillator configuration. Amplitude modulation is used to create a
complex bell-like waveform in Oscillator 2.
OSC CTRL
controls the pitch
of the Oscillator 2 modulator, and thereby its harmonic content and
character.
MIX nOISE
the
Mix Noise
oscillator configuration provides a white noise generator,
which can be
mixed
with the main oscillator using
OSC CTRL
.
the Mix noise configuration has no
OSC2/PITCH
settings.
MIX nOISE 2
the
Mix Noise 2
oscillator configuration provides a band-passed and
resonant, pitched noise, which can be
mixed
with the main oscillator
using
OSC CTRL
.
OSC2/PITCH
controls the pitch of the noise in semitone steps, ranging
from 0 to 48.
DUAL FM
the basic principle behind
frequency modulation
(FM) synthesis is that
one oscillator (the modulator) modulates the frequency of another (the
carrier). the resulting waveform is far more rich in harmonics than the
original Sine waveform, and drastic changes in tonal character are pro-
vided by altering the amount of modulation.
traditionally, FM oscillators are referred to as
operators
, and the Dual FM
configuration represents a 2-operator FM setup.
the number of harmonics, and their intensity, increase proportionally to
the FM amount, controlled by
OSC CTRL
. As usual, this parameter can
be modulated by the Modulation Envelope or the LFO, and it can be
Morph controlled by any combination of wheel, aftertouch and pedal.
OSC2/PITCH
controls the pitch of Oscillator 2 (the “modulator”) in semi-
tone steps, ranging from 0 to 48.
M
S-Wave waveforms and Samples have no Dual FM configuration.
tRIPLE FM
the triple FM configuration represents a 3-operator setup, where Os-
cillator 2 is a modulator pair. the amount of modulation applied by the
modulator pair is controlled by
OSC CTRL
.
OSC2/PITCH
controls the pitch of the modulator pair in semitone steps,
ranging from 0 to 48.
M
S-Wave waveforms and Samples have no Triple FM configuration.
RIng MOD
With the Ring Mod (Ring Modulation) configuration, Oscillator 1 will be
multiplied
with a sine wave from Oscillator 2. this multiplication results
in additional tones appearing, the pitches of which depend on the pitch
relationship between Oscillator 1 and Oscillator 2.
OSC2/PITCH
controls the pitch of Oscillator 2, and accordingly the char-
acter of the resulting signal.
OSC CTRL
sets the mix of Oscillator 1 and the modulated signal.
Synth PRESEtS
When a nord Stage 3 program is stored, its Synth settings are stored
together with all other panel settings – but it is also possible to select
and store Synth sounds
separately
from programs. this way a library
of your favorite synth sounds can be built, easily accessible whenever
needed. the nord Stage 3 also comes with a large selection of useful
Synth Presets right from the start.
SELECtIng Synth PRESEtS
there are 8 banks of 50 synth presets each, two of which are empty
when shipped from the factory. Simply turn the
SYNTH PRESET
dial in
order to browse and audition presets. the Program section display will
show the location and name of the currently selected preset. the Synth
section display shows the Oscillator and Oscillator Configuration settings
for the currently selected preset.
