Location Data
A GPS unit can be connected to the ten-pin remote terminal,
allowing the current latitude, longitude, altitude, Coordinated
Universal Time (UTC), and heading to be recorded with each
photograph taken. The camera can be used with optional GP-1
and GP-1A GPS units (see below; note that these units do not
provide the compass heading), or with compatible third-party
units connected via an optional MC-35 GPS adapter cord (
428).

GP-1/GP-1A GPS Units
These optional GPS units are designed for use with Nikon digital
cameras. For information on connecting the unit, see the manual
provided with the device.

Icon
Connection status is shown by the
o
icon in the
information display:
•

(static)
: Location data acquired.
•
o
(flashing)
: The GPS device is searching for a
signal. Pictures taken while the icon is
flashing do not include location data.
•
No icon
: No new location data have been
received from the GPS device for at least two seconds. Pictures taken
when the
o
icon is not displayed do not include location data.

Heading
The heading is only recorded if the GPS device is
equipped with a digital compass (note that the
GP-1 and GP-1A are not equipped with a
compass). Keep the GPS device pointing in the
same direction as the lens and at least 20 cm
(8 in.) from the camera.

Coordinated Universal Time (UTC)
UTC data is provided by the GPS device and is independent of the
camera clock.
