Selecting a Protocol

The

Meritor WABCO ABS Application

uses the SAE J1587

communication

protocol to interact with the trailer’s brake controller. As such, it requires you to
select one of the following hardware protocols in order to establish a connection
to the ECU:

•

J1708/J1587 BUS,

which sends J1587 messages (i.e., information) over

the J1708 bus through the trailer Deutsch connector.

•

PLC/ENHANCED MODE,

which sends J1587 messages over the

Power Line Carrier (PLC). (Only available for ECUs that support En-
hanced PLC Mode.) Receive information through the Deutsch or Power
Line connectors on the trailer. If the tractor and trailer are connected, re-
ceive information from the trailer ECU through either Deutsch connector.

Use the following table to help you decide which protocol best suits your needs.

• If you’re testing a trailer that’s

• The ECU(s) you’re testing doesn’t support

Enhanced PLC Mode, i.e., Meritor WABCO Easy-
Stop™.
