3. Brief description and operation
The U 47 fet is a condenser studio mi-
crophone with a cardioid directional
characteristic and fet 80 circuit tech-
nology. It features an extensive dy-
namic range, and clean sound trans-
mission, free of coloration.
The electroacoustic transducer of the
U 47 fet is a large double-diaphragm
capsule. It has a mild presence boost
above 2 kHz. A switchable high-pass
fi lter increases the lower cutoff fre-
quency from 40 Hz to 140 Hz.
The pre-attenuation switch reduces
the microphone sensitivity by 10 dB,
thus allowing the processing of very
high sound pressure levels. To avoid
saturation of the subsequent pream-
plifi er the output signal may be re-
duced by 6 dB with a switch on the
underside of the microphone.
For stable positioning, the micro-
phone is mounted in a swivel bracket.
The side bracket has a 5/8“-27 female
thread, plus a thread adapter to con-
nect to 1/2“ and 3/8“ stands. The
microphone cable can be clamped
to the slot in the side bracket using
the knurled nut (max. cable diameter
5 mm).
Address the microphone from the side
on which the Neumann logo is located.

• Operating manual
5. Setup
Mounting the microphone
Attach the microphone to a stable,
sturdy stand. In order to suppress
wind or pop noise, use a windscreen
or popscreen from our range of acces-
sories.
Connecting the microphone
Caution: An incorrect supply voltage
can damage the microphone!
Attach the microphone only to a
power supply unit, a microphone pre-
amplifi er, a mixing console or other
equipment which has phantom power
with 48 V (P48), in accordance with
IEC 61938. Any P48 power supply
equipment can be used which supplies
at least 0.5 mA per channel.
Caution: Very high signal levels
can damage loudspeakers and your
hearing!
Minimize the volume of connected
playback and recording equipment be-
fore connecting the microphone.
Using a suitable cable, connect the
microphone to the microphone input
of the audio equipment to be used for
subsequent processing, or to the des-
ignated P48 power supply equipment.
